NEMLAB

NEMLAB is a product that has been developed by IES to analyse, modify, and re-run historical 5 minute dispatch intervals of the NEM.  It completely reproduces historical dispatch outcomes including the multi-solve logics as required (associated with centrally committed units, intervention directives, non-physical transmission losses, Basslink no go zone etc.)

The usefulness of NAMLAB comes from the ability to undertake sensitivities on historical dispatch outcomes and to obtain results that include all the factors that influence NEM dispatch and pricing outcomes.   The sensitivities include the recalculation of the Right Hand Side (RHS) of all the generic constraints each 5 minute dispatch interval.

The data utilised by NEMLAB comes from NEMDE’s input/output files published by AEMO. They are generated by NEMDE and contain all of its input and output data.

NEMLAB is made of the following modules:

  • NEMDE Database
  • NEMDE data loader
  • SCENARIOS Database
  • Dynamic RHS computation module
  • IES Generic Dispatch Engine Database
  • IES Generic Dispatch Engine
  • NEMLAB driver and user interface.

NEMLAB can be used to assess the sensitivity and impact of changes to transmission constraint costs, ancillary services, prices etc.  It has been used by IES in audits of NEMDE, determining the historical impact of certain events, and assessing the limitations and cost of transmission constraints.

NEMLAB is not released for use by parties outside of IES but is available for IES to undertake specialised studies.
