REFORM LEADERSHIP
IES Advisory Services has been involved in electricity market reform for over two decades. Our involvement includes reform leadership in Victoria from the beginning of the reform process in south-eastern Australia, utility experience throughout that period and lead roles in both industry reform working groups and major reform consulting projects.
INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE
IES Advisory Services staff have substantial industry experience gained from working within the energy industry and from IES consulting projects that have required working with industry organisations. This experience spans hydro and thermal generation, gas and coal supply, transmission planning and operations, distribution, large customer purchasing, power system operations, corporate finance, asset management, and electricity market and economic modelling.
STRATEGIC ADVICE
IES provides advice to companies trading in electricity markets and regulators. Examples of advice include key aspects of risk management and measurement, scenario development, and regulatory issues.
ELECTRICITY MARKET MODELLING
IES has been involved in electricity market modelling from the introduction of competitive electricity markets in the early 1990s. Our modelling capability and experience includes both model development and the use of models in work ranging from price projections, asset valuations, reform and policy development. IES Advisory Services provides input into the development and use of the sophisticated IES market model PROPHET.
MACRO ENERGY MODELLING
IES undertakes the modelling of macro energy systems using the model MARKAL. MARKAL is used to model national energy systems and their interrelationships. An example of the use of MARKAL by IES is the recent work in the ASEAN countries as part of a project to strengthen the institutional capability of energy policy development.
TRANSACTIONS
IES Advisory Services has extensive experience in working with transactions teams in both the purchase and sale of electricity market assets. This experience has provided key insights into the dynamics of transaction processes and the risks associated with electricity market assets, as well as how best to value those assets.
QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS TOOLS
One of the key strengths of IES Advisory Services is its relationship with IES Software, which develops modelling and risk software for use in electricity markets and more generally, energy markets. IES Advisory Services staff contribute extensive expertise in the use and development of IES Software modelling and analysis products.
