South East Asia
IES has been involved in energy market work and studies in South East Asia since 2002. IES has provided advice to policy-makers, regulators, government agencies, private energy companies, banks and others with an interest in power industries in South East Asia.
The type of work that IES typically provides in the regions power and energy industry includes:
- Policy and Regulatory advice
- Energy sector modelling
- Power industry studies
- Training / Workshops
To support IES projects focused on South East Asia, IES maintains:
- Databases on generation projections, generation technology costs, demand, macroeconomic statistics and other associated data for countries including: South Korea, Thailand, Taiwan, Singapore, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, the Philippines and others as the need arises
- A MARKAL-based energy sector models for most ASEAN countries including: Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore and Malaysia. These are suitable for conducting general assessments of the energy sectors of the countries
Examples of recent work involving the South East Asian region includes:
- Detailed assessment of investment and trade barriers and opportunities for energy market integration in the East Asia Summit (EAS) region. IES consultants engaged in detailed discussions and assessments of the status of electricity (and other energy sectors) with key government and commercial entities active in the energy industries of the 16 countries in the EAS including: Australia, Brunei, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, New Zealand, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. The study included country-by country reviews on the status of the renewable energy sector in each of the studied countries and an overview of energy trade in the region in general.
- Long-term AusAID-funded co-operative project designed to raise the energy policy modelling skills for eight ASEAN countries. Through the period 2003 to 2006 IES provided the project management and technical skills for an AusAID-funded co-operative project focused on the ASEAN region designed to enhance the energy policy modelling skills for eight ASEAN countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar. The project required IES to assist these countries to build an energy production, processing, transmission, distribution and consumption model database to allow energy policy options to be studied. The project lasted for nearly four years with successful completion in 2006. Country participants include government policy analysts and energy modellers, representatives of the major utilities and academics. The assessment of renewable energy and schemes attractive to the Kyoto Clean Development Mechanisms (CDM) were a key part of this program. Overall, IES assisted in the conduct of 18 National and 3 Regional energy policy studies. A key element of the Regional studies was the analysis of various gas pipelines and electricity interconnections between the ASEAN countries.
- Power Industry Simulation Studies for certain countries in Asia: South Korea, Japan and Thailand.
