For Singapore’s electricity industry, IES proactively maintains:
- A database that is continuously updated with the latest NEMS data that published by the industry regulator, market operator, and other organisations that publish information relevant to the NEMS. This includes half-hourly nodal prices, generation by technology, ancillary service prices and demand data. To support this activity IES uses their product, NEO.
- A Singapore electricity market simulation model that is regularly updated with: existing and planned generation projects, updated fuel prices projections and developments in Singapore’s electricity and gas sectors, demand-side developments and other changes to policy and the electricity market rules. To support this activity IES uses their electricity market simulation software PROPHET, which emulates the key features of Singapore's electricity industry.
Examples of projects that IES has completed in the recent past include:
- Many Singapore Electricity Market Studies to Facilitate Investment Decisions. Including reviews of the existing state of the NEMS, review of current and proposed policy as it pertains to the electricity and gas sectors, assessments of likely industry evolution and detailed simulations of the power market. These studies have been conducted for a variety of corporations, including: existing market participants considering expansion, corporations within Singapore considering market entry and corporations located outside Singapore considering market entry. They have involved assessing numerous generation technology options and different potential operating strategies within the NEMS.
- Singapore Electricity Industry Review. IES completed a detailed study covering the regulatory framework, development of the NEMS, review of the asset sales process outcomes, review of the present industry structure and performance of participants in the industry, review of the existing supply and demand situation, review of the primary fuel supply situation in Singapore and the ASEAN region. From this perspectives and projections have been developed on how the energy sector in Singapore may evolve over the medium term.
- Review of Policy and Proposed Changes to Market Rules. IES periodically provides independent assessments and advice to existing participants on existing market rules, changes to industry policy and proposed changes to the market rules.
- Market Advice to Corporations Interested in Acquiring Assets during Temasek's GENCO Sales Process. IES performed a number of market studies and provided advice to confidential clients during the Generation asset sales process over 2007-2009.
- Training and Workshops on the NEMS. IES has conducted training and workshops for participants to introduce them to the design principles and concepts that underpin the NEMS and also general policies and industry structure to provide a broader perspective on Singapore’s energy industry.
